Wix Launches a New AI Coding Tool
Wix, the SaaS website builder, introduced the Wix Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, which enables users to build websites, web apps, and custom business solutions using AI coding assistants and large language models (LLMs). The AI-powered tool is free, with the option to upgrade for extended functionality.
Although ‘MCP’ isn’t a widely established industry term, Wix defines it as “an open standard for creating connections between data sources and AI-powered tools. MCP servers provide AI-powered tools with resources such as documentation, API access, and other functionality,” the company explains. “The AI tool can then access these resources while it executes tasks, expediting workflows.”
The Wix MCP Server is connected to multiple AI-powered assistants, including Claude, Cursor, and Windsurf. Users can simply provide instructions in natural language – MCP handles the context and execution. Through simple conversations, users can generate production-ready code for various purposes, including custom business solutions.
Wix says the tool is designed primarily for developers, including freelancers, in-house teams, agencies, and AI automation specialists. That said, tech-savvy business owners can leverage its capabilities since it doesn’t require manual coding.
For example, an online apparel store owner may ask the tool to “add order status tracking and create a featured product section with 6 items,” as Wix exemplifies in a screenshot of an interaction with its MCP.
Wix’s MCP can be used for building websites, web apps, and custom Wix apps with features like e-commerce, booking, payments, subscriptions, event management, blogs, CMS, and CRM tools. Wix’s MCP also comes with extensive back-office management tools. Developers can also build other Wix business solutions with open APIs.
“This initiative underscores the importance of continuing our efforts to open more APIs and enhance our documentation, marking just the beginning of a larger strategy to facilitate AI disruption within the industry,” Yaniv Even Haim, CTO at Wix, emphasized in a press release.
Initially, a platform enabling non-tech-savvy individuals to build professional websites, Wix is making continuous efforts to expand its appeal and win over developers by offering more advanced tools and greater customization options. The new MCP builds on Wix Studio, a platform dedicated to developers building websites at scale, which launched in 2023.
Aside from developer-focused tools, Wix has also upgraded its platform with a few new automation and customization features.
